CHAPTER 20
After the foreman left them alone, Bob and his cohorts returned to
the project they had been hard at work on before the distraction.
Youre going to have to get used to this, guys, Bob counseled them.
When youre a highly-paid Recreation Engineer, everybody wants a
piece of you. He then dialed the central desk and announced,
Gladys, I want you to hold all calls.
Who is this? asked Gladys, the central desk secretary.
This is the Recreation Engineering department, Bob speaking.
Were hard at work and cant be interrupted. No calls and no visitors,
got it?
I dont see a Recreation Engineering Department on my roster,
Bob.
Right. Well, hold all calls anyway. Were hard at work over
here.
Thats nice, said Gladys, and hung up.
Bob turned to Wade and Leonard with a face so grave his pimples
looked like tombstones. I guess were more important than we
thought, he said.
Whys that, dude? asked Wade.
Were a fuckin top-secret department, man, he said weightily.
Check this out: were not even on the company roster.
No one is
supposed to know about us!
Far out! said Leonard.
Newly imbued with pride, Bob eagerly got back to work on a
project he initiated days before, a result of Leonards prying into the
e-mail of the company members. After thoroughly reviewing the
private correspondence of many of the company staff members, Bob
had come to the conclusion that no one had any idea what was going
on at VTV. Well, besides the Recreation Engineering Department, of
course, and thats where he came in.
Look at this memo, for example, Bob addressed his underlings.
Some dweeb so-called Executive thinks that VTV is showing too
many stories about serial killers!
No! protested Wade.
H O L Y S H I T !
