Boulevard, his head hung low, the truck filled with drunken
teenagers came barreling out of the dead-end street, around the
corner and collided with him, crushing his body to a pulp and
sending him flying thirty feet into the air.
As he witnessed the world spin around him from that great
height, Hopkins only thought was this:
So long,
life.
Life, however, didn’t have a chance to say goodbye. “I told you I’d
be back for you,” came Muchoman’s voice. And then the spinning
grew faster and the street seemed to be getting farther and farther
away.
And then everything got
really
weird.
CHAPTER 15
“You’re not going to ease up on me about this, are you?”
“It’s not a matter of forbearance, you withered tart,” Harvey
explained. “I simply do not trust you. You are from dirt and you shall
return to dirt. Such is your nature.”
“Same as everybody else, sugar,” responded Victoria confidently,
“But in the meantime, I’m trying to do a little gardening. Sorry if I
borrowed your lawn mower. It seemed like the right thing to do at the
time. Anyway, don’t you think it’s for the best? We’re gonna help you
get your machine back!”
“Yes, but for your own use,” Harvey pointed out. “Not mine.”
“Hey, don’t get me involved here. I’m just along for the ride.
Sure, maybe these guys are a few kernels short of the cob, but I sure
think their intentions are heaps better than that boss of yours.”
“Legion are the tragedies spawned by noble intentions.”
“What? Why don’t you speak English for once?” laughed
Victoria. “I swear, you sound like you’re speaking Grecian all the
time.”
“You mean Greek. If you can’t comprehend proper English, that
is your misfortune, not mine.”
“Proper English?” she cackled, “Far as I can tell, language is for
communicating, and a hell of a lot of folks would understand me
before they understood you. Maybe one day you’ll be asking me to
save your ass, and I won’t understand what you’re saying. Then we’ll
see how proper that English of yours is.”
“What a supremely unlikely scenario.”
